Spinal Cord Injury Cases Handled by Top San Diego Personal Injury Attorneys

Spinal Cord Injuries are some of the most serious cases that our San Diego personal injury attorneys handle. A spinal cord injury occurs when a serious accident either harms the spinal cord cells or damages the nerve tracts that function to send signals along the spinal cord. Unfortunately, spinal cord injuries are not uncommon, and are known to affect anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 United States residents per year. Of these people suffering spinal cord injuries, about 10,000 are permanently paralyzed, and many individuals do not survive their injuries. Our San Diego injury attorneys have litigated many spinal cord injury cases, and understand the hardship it can bring upon an individual and a family.

Those most at risk to spinal cord injuries are, surprisingly, young persons in prime health. The population most affected by spinal cord injuries is males between the age of 15 and 35 years old, and the primary cause of spinal cord injuries is automobile accidents, which account for 36-44% of all of these injuries. Fortunately at Berman & Riedel, LLP, we have experienced San Diego car accident lawyers who have successfully litigated spinal cord injury cases in the past. Other common causes of spinal cord injury that our attorneys can assist you with include sports injuries and general violence.

Spinal cord injuries exist in two classifications and two types:

Spinal Cord Injury Classifications:

  • Paraplegia: Damage to the spinal cord in the thoracic (mid back), lumbar (low back), sacral (pelvic), or other segment of the lower spinal cord.
  • Tetraplegia (also referred to as quadriplegia): Injury to the spinal cord in the cervical spine (neck); involves loss of strength in the arm and leg muscles.

Spinal Cord Injury Types:

  • Complete: Individual is unable to function below the point of injury on both sides of the body and has no feeling or voluntary movement in the affected region.
  • Incomplete: Individual has some movement and function below the point of injury.  This individual might have movement in one limb but not in another, may experience sensation in areas that cannot be moved, or may have uneven functioning of the body's different sides.

A spinal cord injury is different from back injury. Back injuries that damage the vertebrae only, but do not affect the spinal cord are not considered to be spinal cord injuries. So in a sense, someone can "break their back" but still not suffer a spinal cord injury.

Brain injuries commonly occur with incidents of spinal cord injury. If this is the case with someone close to you, contact a San Diego brain injury lawyer from our firm to discuss your case. We are committed to bringing full justice you and your family under the law.
